addis ababa {Ethiopia}

My husband is in Addis this week for work, and telling me how much the city has changed since we last visited. These are some images of our trip to Addis Ababa.

the netela

Ethiopian women use this cloth to cover their head and shoulders, especially when attending church. It is made up of two layers of fabric with colorful trimmings on the edges.
I got carried away when I went shopping for these and got many of them as well as cotton tablecloths.

the injera

A large soft, pancake like crepe served with a communal tray on which are an array of spicy sauces.
I tried it and enjoyed it {especially the sauces} but I it is definitely an "acquired taste".

mount entoto

One of the seven mountains that surround Addis, and the best location to observe the panoramic view of Addis Ababa both day and night.
On the top of the hill, stands St. Mary's Church built in 1885.
Our visit to Addis was just before "Fasika" {Ethiopian Easter}, so churches were packed with people praying.

made today

I have been very busy finishing the Fall-Winter 2011/12 Collection, but today I managed to make some time to bake these brownies. A recipe I had not tried before...

working on...

For the past few weeks I have been working on the details for my new fall-winter 2011/12 collection.

Some of the accessories have mushrooms in different colors {burgundy & forest green / pink & red / eggplant & steel ...}, plus the classic red & white.

meet our knitters {Elena}

Elena was born in Potosi 59 years ago. She came to Cochabamba eight years ago looking for better opportunities. She has six children: Miguelina {38 years old}, Costa {34 years old}, Isaac {28 years old}, Hilda {25 years old}, Sonia {22 years old}, and Elba {18 years old}.

Elena doesn't speak Spanish, only Quechua, which makes communication with me a bit difficult... but we manage to understand each other. Well, we have managed for the last 6 years that she has been with us. She is a wonderful knitter!

I have never seen Elena without her hat.

can we get this party started?

My youngest is seven. A pretty handsome seven year old in my opinion….pretty amazing in many other ways too. He wanted a small party with the boys from his class… a Skull and Cotton Candy party that is.
We always have birthday celebrations {no ifs or buts...}. I adore party planning, big or small, so my husband and I take the task very seriously every year.
On Saturday we all woke up early to bake the cupcakes, cake and marshmallow icing for both {Sebastian's special request}, pizza dough and marinara for the homemade pizzas, brownies, cookies. Luckily, the sun was shining and we could finish all the decorations and cooking before guests arrived.
This year we had only boys and that kept me busy, busy all afternoon... so I could not take as much photos as I wanted.

We went with two colors: white & black {with hints of red}.

He is seven! We had fun celebrating and I had fun trying playing with the kids. I hope when he looks back at his childhood he’ll remember some of his birthday parties and the love into each of the details of the preparations.

versatile blogger award!

Marivic from define1lady and Laura from Laura-Bear graciously recognized me for the Versatile Blogger Award.
It is always very exciting to be recognized for the work you do everyday.
Thank you so much ladies for thinking of me! I truly appreciate it and I enjoy very much reading your blogs!

In order to accept the award, I have to tell you seven things about myself that you don’t already know. Then, I have to pass this on to seven bloggers that I think are great.

1. Thank and link back to who gave you the award.
2. Share 7 things about yourself.
3. Pass it along to 7 blogs you've recently discovered and enjoy
4. Leave your recipients a note, telling them about the award.

Seven facts about me:

1. I love to read. On my bedside table these days: Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential".
2. I have lived away from home {Costa Rica} for 20 years and I miss my family terribly... especially now that I have two wonderful nephews.
3. I am dyslexic... this means that helping my children with their math homework is an almost impossible task for me.
4. There is nothing I enjoy better than baking. It is a way of relaxing for me.
5. I am learning to meditate. Trying to make it a daily routine, but it is still hard to wake up early in the morning to train my mind to be still.
6. I did not like to have pets at home until we got our dog Russell. I am absolutely in love with him now.
7. I love being a mother... maybe you know that already.

I am passing the award to:

spa party I

I can't believe it's been a week since I've been here...
Things have been really hectic at work and home, especially because last Saturday we celebrated Daniela's birthday with a spa party in our garden.

Spa Party {part I}

Lip gloss for all the girls in different colors... and flavors

everything for their manicures & pedicures. Nail polish in pink, red, blue, purple, fuchsia...

Pink, yellow and white flowers for the occasion

A table full of colorful candies

a robe for each girl

...and a robe for their teddy bears who were also cordially invited to the party

large cushions on the floor so the girls could rest in between beauty treatments

the massage bed on the terrace

craft table with flowers, rhinestones, pearls, glitter glue and more to decorate their pink silk eye masks

I really enjoyed helping them with the eye masks I had sewn for them.
Each eye mask had its own printed bag to take home with them after the party.

More party tomorrow.
