halloween at school

What are your plans for this Halloween weekend? We started by going to the kids school Halloween celebration. It is always fun to see the costumes they wear, hear them sing and dance...

This weekend we will be carving pumpkins and trick or treating around our neighborhood.

Hope you all have a spooky weekend!

the ballerina

Speaking of tooth fairies, we had her visit last night. My little boy lost another tooth (his third...) yesterday afternoon. I missed out on all the drama because it fell off at school.
His pick to leave the tooth out for the tooth fairy (or Raton Perez as it is known here...) was the Pirate tooth fairy pillow.

earth tones

Today's post is very late... I know! I have been busy all day with work and making cookies for my daughter's birthday. It feels like it was yesterday when she was a little baby learning to talk and walk... she'll be eleven years old tomorrow.
These are two photos of the trimmings on the bags I have been working on for a while. They're made with aguayo and I added other hand made details to make them all one of a kind.

Indigenous women in Bolivia braid their hair in two braids. The ends are fastened by braiding a string in, then tying the string at the end with tassled tullmas.
The tullmas are usually made of wool and sometimes beaded.
I have been collecting beaded tullmas since I first came to Bolivia ten years ago. Some of them I have used to make key rings, napkin rings and trimmings for bags.
The market in Cochabamba has a section where they only sell tullmas in thousands of colors and styles.

meet our knitters {Salome}

Salome was born in Oruro 33 years ago. She has four girls: Maritza (14 years old), Melissa (13 years old), Yamil (4 years old), and Belen (3 years old).
She has been with us for almost a year crocheting the most beautiful necklaces and the new tooth fairies from our Spring-Summer 2011 collection.

marbled cupcakes

{a traditional children's favorite baked on Sunday morning}

Two batters in one + swirl with a knife... that is basically what this easy recipe is. Add chocolate ganache and you have a delightful dessert.

Happy Monday! {...YES, we love cupcakes}

making crowns

Finishing the week with bright colors for my new tooth fairies {this is just a glimpse}.
There are ballerinas, queens, pirates and party boys... and girls. Coming soon!

Hope you all have a good weekend.

first drops of rain

The first drops of rain always bring a smile on our faces. The smell of wet soil, the damp grass, and the slosh of puddles under our feet make us want to dance with joy, especially after seven months of a severe drought.

for cold days

I wish it was cooler outside so I could wrap this scarf around my neck.

red velvet

{ FIRST TIME } Red velvet cupcakes with Swiss meringue frosting.

I've had the picture of the perfect red velvet cupcake in my head, but wanted to reduce the red food coloring. Most recipes call for 2 Tablespoons of food coloring and I used only 1/2 teaspoon... so not too red {maybe more like pink velvet?}, but incredibly moist.
Another substitution to the original recipe: I used Swiss meringue instead of the traditional cream cheese frosting, just because I wanted a lighter cupcake.

{Apparently, the signature red color of these cupcakes is because in the old days, the unprocessed cocoa used in the cake turned a red color when combined with the milk}

thank you thea

Million thanks to Thea {the super talented designer behind the Thea & Sami printed designs in Brisbane, Australia} for featuring a lovely interview with me on her Friday Follower. Read more here.

wrap up the week {with a bowl of pasta}

Spaghetti al pesto is one of my favorite ways to serve spaghetti. If you can find fresh basil I highly recommend you to make your own pesto instead of buying it. You will appreciate the difference in flavor.

Happy Weekend Everyone!!!

a happy video... {Costa Rica}

I just had to share this video about Costa Rica with you. It is one of those things that makes me so homesick to the point of bringing tears to my eyes. It also makes me very proud to be from Costa Rica, one of the happiest places on Earth.

{note: I love the music!!!!}

meet our knitters {Rosemary}

Rosemary has been with us since I can remember. She was born 34 years ago in Pucara, north of Potosi. She has four boys, Olsen (15 years old), Jason (12 years old), Brian (10 years old), and Kevin (8 years old). She also takes care and provides for her nephew Carlos (4 years old) because his mother migrated to Spain a few years ago.
She us a self-taught knitter. Everything that comes out of her hands is a treasure.

{you might be wondering what's with names... but as I write this, I am also asking myself the same question}

Always wearing her flower hat.

Rosemary knitted these baby pants. If you know about knitting you can see that her tension is perfect for the pima cotton we use.

quinoa risotto

My favorite gluten-free grain is quinoa. I've grown to love its unique nutty flavor. Quinoa has more and higher quality protein than any other grain aside from amaranth. Best of all, I appreciate the fact that quinoa can be found everywhere in Bolivia.
