thank you Pirouette

Thank you so much to Florence Rolando from Pirouette for posting an interview with my daughter Daniela and me. It was so much fun to answer the questions and tell a bit more about us and what we like. Read the full interview here and scroll down to read more of Florence's great posts.

Thank you!!!

I am thrilled to bits to have the khanga dresses from my Lamu to Zanzibar Collection appear on the wonderful blogs: The Punctuation Mark and A Life More Fabulous. Thanks Elie for letting me know about this!!!!

apple pie cake

Yesterday I baked the easiest apple pie. Just made a crust and used part of it on the top as a crumb topping. The filling was just the apples with cinnamon, no sugar added.

giving a helping hand

Through my company Fournier I help various causes in Bolivia and Kenya. These photos are from a day care in Caracollo, Bolivia. I have been sending them clothing, toys, and bed linen to help the mothers who work harvesting the quinoa flowers in the area.
The day care is maintained by these single mothers. They leave their children there while they go to work during the week.

new from nigeria

I'm really excited today to share with you these wonderful wax fabrics from Nigeria. My friend Kasia sent them last week. I was anxious to receive them and get to work on new styles for my African range of clothing and accessories.
I just love them!

Kasia knows how much I love beads, so she also sent me these strands of Nigerian beads. It seems I'll be making some necklaces this weekend.

Hope you all have a wonderful and colorful weekend! See you Monday.

moss rib stitch

I am in love with the moss/rib stitch. It is not the regular rib stitch but still has that stretchy feel. It is perfect for hats and scarves.

fourth grade hall of fame

Daniela's presentation about Martha Stewart was amazing. Not everyone was familiar with the character she represented, but she did a very good job in letting everyone know about Martha's world. She set herself up using some books and magazines, as well as whisks, spatulas, cookie jars, a hand mixer and of course and apron.
She handed out sugar cookies to her classmates and teachers after she finished her presentation.

as martha

Today Daniela will be Martha Stewart for 10 minutes at her school's Hall of Fame. She went through all my books and magazines and chose the ones she thinks are the most representative of Martha's work. I do not have them all but I have a good collection. I have been subscribed to Living since 1995 and to Everyday Food since day one. I have all the Christmas and crafts books and most of the cooking books.
We baked some sugar cookies and at the end of her presentation she will decorate one cookie with royal icing.

La Paz trunk show

The trunk show in La Paz was a huge success! Lots of people, great sales and so much fun for me and the kids. We also had the chance to see some of our friends who live in La Paz and catch up with them.

bread baking

Making bread is a long process, especially when the recipe calls for a "biga" like for this ciabatta and pane Pugliese we made on Ester Sunday. The focaccia is a lot easier and faster to make but still requires 24 hours to chill the dough and enhance the flavors and textures.
The ciabatta recipe has been with us for twelve years... since we had a small restaurant in the Panama highlands. We named our restaurant BIGA and the ciabatta was our signature bread.
The pane Pugliese is a recipe from The Bread Bible. A rich dense bread with a thick crust.

next weekend

I'm going to La Paz on Friday for a weekend long trunk show. I will be showing my latest African range accessories as well as clothing and accessories for children. There will also be other exhibitors and activities for the kids all weekend long.

I have not been in La Paz for a while so it is also a good opportunity to see some friends and visit some lovely shops in the city.

easter sunday {cakes}

Happy Monday everyone! My Easter weekend was filled with loads of leisurely activities: lunch with friends, bread and cake baking in our new oven, laughing with kids while looking for eggs in our garden, and enjoying the time off. I hope you had a lovely weekend too!
I have always wanted to make a vegetable patch cake for Easter! this year I had the time and patience to seat for endless hours to make the chocolate fudge cake and decorate it with eggplants, lettuce, corn, carrots, tomatoes, watermelons, Easter eggs, flowers and of course Easter bunny.
I also made a "mille feuille" (I call it "torta chilena" and fill it with dulce de leche instead of vanilla custard) and decorate it with pink flowers, hand painted fondant eggs and Easter bunny.
