local pumpkins

We cannot find orange pumpkins here, so we are making the most out of the local variety.
First we taped the design onto the pumpkin. Then we used an awl to punch the holes along the design. With my ceramic making tools we carved the outline and interior features of the image, exposing but not cutting all the way through the flesh. We painted the design with a permanent marker and then added petroleum jelly to the exposed flesh. Looks nice with the candle inside.
Tomorrow we will make jack-o'-lanterns with three extra pumpkins we bought for this Halloween celebration.

homemade ice cream

Last week I made five flavors of ice cream for Daniela's birthday. She wanted to have an ice cream buffet but would only accept homemade. We discussed the flavors and decided on mango cream, strawberry sorbet, french vanilla, chocolate gelato and blackberry sorbet.
Berries are just coming in season so it was not hard to find nice strawberries and blackberries for our recipes.

embroidered bags

Just a peek at my new linen handbags in light colors. They are all lined in cotton with pockets for cell phone, keys, and others. I am still working on the light blue and navy bags that need to be ready this weekend to ship to Kenya where this collection will be available at my trunk show on November 24.

dani's birthday {highlights}

Last week was very busy getting ready for Daniela's 10th. birthday party on Saturday. All her friends came to celebrate with us. It was a day filled with fun activities for the girls. We made bracelets, necklaces and rings with czech glass beads. The girls jumped for hours on a jumping trampoline we hired for the day. Two manicurist painted their tiny nails with white stamps and clear gloss.
We all enjoyed my sugar cookies, brownies, ice cream buffet and birthday cake.
Cannot wait for Sebastian's birthday in a few weeks.

sugar cookies

Sugar cookies are my favorite, especially in this dry weather where they remain crunchy even if left out all night.
I baked 75 sugar cookies today for my daughter's birthday party tomorrow. Tonight I will make royal icing in different colors and decorate them. The party's theme is "polka dots" so I used only round cookie cutters this time.

happy birthday

It's my daughter's birthday today and she asked me to bake cupcakes to take to school and celebrate with her classmates. I made vanilla cupcakes filled with "dulce de leche" and marshmallow frosting. She loved them!
We will have a party next Saturday with all her girlfriends. Happy Birthday Daniela, I love you!

pom-pom tissue flowers

It is my daughter's birthday party next Saturday and I am working round the clock to have everything ready. She's turning ten, so we decided we are not having pinata or balloons this year. She said I can leave that for her younger brother's party in two weeks.... she's growing up.
Instead of balloons we will have pom-pom tissue flowers. I thought it would be easy to make them, but it wasn't!!! Tissue paper is very thin and it tears easily, so it took me double the time than I had thought, but the result is really nice.

embroidery {flowers on linen}

Last week I worked on a sample for a linen handbag. The beautiful pattern is from a japanese book I love. When I saw the finished bag I thought it would be nice to embroider the fabric before sewing the pieces together. This is one of the flower designs I have been working on since last Saturday.

a family favorite {tres leches}

Yesterday I made one of my family's favorite desserts, Tres Leches. For many years I have been making this wonderful sweet delight, adjusting to altitude whenever I have moved to a city above 1500 meters.
It is very easy to make but I always start the day before to make sure that it has chilled completely before we eat it.

sushi rolls {my son's way}

My six year old son Sebastian loves sushi. It is amazing that he uses his playtime to express his love for this kind of food.
These are his play-doh sushi rolls... wasabi and everything!

Happy weekend!!!

October 12, 2009

I managed to finish a dozen linen brooches on Saturday night. I worked with ecru, ivory and white and added more colorful centers to the flowers. Love the result and I am sure they are going to be a hit at my trunk show in Nairobi next November 24. All my designs will be available there... so exciting!!!

step 1 {necklaces}

Could not wait to post these photos of some of my necklaces. Still have to add the silk and linen strings that will finish them. Will do that on Monday once I finish all the flowers.

on my desk

Busy, busy making necklaces with my crochet flowers.

October 8, 2009

I am using linen and cotton fabrics to create the brooches for my new collection of accessories . Before making them I have to starch the fabric to make sure it will hold its shape and travel well from Bolivia to Kenya.
It is a time consuming process and not so fun, but there is no other way to do it. First I dip the fabric in the starch and water mix, then I let it dry and iron it. After ironing I can start making the petals for the flowers.

a flower {for my daughter}

My daughter Daniela has been seeing me make flowers these days and asked me to make one for her. She put it on her jacket and wore it to school today.

linen meets crochet

I spent a good part of my weekend creating brooches. I combined linen with crochet, added tiny beads to crochet flowers.... and had lots of fun doing it! I simply enjoy the whole process of cutting the fabric and playing with it; as well as feeling the yarn between my fingers when knitting the flowers.

October 2, 2009

Between French finals and shipping re-orders from my Fall-Winter collection, I have managed to put some designs on paper and then make the patterns. I've been working mostly on tops that will be cut in linen and swiss cotton batiste. Next week I will be able to show some of the finished pieces
