friends of the arts

The Friends of the Arts exhibition in Nairobi this year has been a colorful event. My friend Eleftheria and the FOTA group did a very good job in getting together a nice group of artists representing some of the best art in Kenya. These are the ones I like the most.

Great painting by Kathy Katuti. The texture and detail of the kangas is amazing. Kangas are colorful garments worn by women in East Africa. It is a piece of printed cotton fabric, and one of the longer edges of the cloth features a strip which contains a message in kiswahili.

Kibera is the largest slum in Africa. In this painting Kennedy Otiendo pictures it in a very realistic way. The movie The Constant Gardener (2005) with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz was filmed on location in Kibera and other places in Kenya.

Love the detail on the khanga. This is is by Patrick Mukabi.

My daughter Daniela loved these two, especially the "Nairobi Cows".
